2 June 2020

In search of some quality KwaZulu Natal gems to explore post lockdown? We’ve compiled a list of our favourite hidden gems to discover in KwaZulu Natal.

Drakensberg Amphitheatre

The Drakensberg has been one of Kwazulu-Natal’s favourite attractions for decades, but the Amphitheatre puts the cherry on the cake. Renowned as one of the greatest geographical features in South Africa, this sturdy goliath boasts a cliff face that measures over five km and is a paradise for any hiking enthusiast.

The amphitheatre is home to the second highest waterfall in the world, Tugela Falls, ensuring no shortage of scenery. For those wishing to take on the behemoth, there are a few trails, all of which are fairly challenging. Whether you’re setting out to uncover the base of Tugela Falls, or manoeuvring your way through chain ladders to catch a glance from the top, the Drakensberg never disappoints.

Tala Game Reserve

Tala shows you a world of wonder as you traverse its ‘off the beaten track’ 3,000 hectare paradise. Embark on game drive thrills and meet the local wildlife. Spot kudu, buffalo, giraffe, wildebeest, eland and other mighty creatures.

Avid bird watchers are in for a treat with over 380 confirmed bird species across the reserve. For those wishing to stay, Tala treats travellers to a down-to-earth, secluded luxury experience, equipped with a pool. It’s perfect for families. Their dining options feature the La Tala Restaurant, with traditional outdoor bomas for dining under the stars.

ISimangaliso Wetland Park

Similar to Tala, but on a much larger scale, ISimangaliso doesn’t just boast diverse terrain but rather, takes you on a journey through both fresh and salty waters.

With over 500 bird species, Nile crocodiles, hippo, giraffe, elephant, buffalo and even the white rhino, the park has you locking eyes with a multitude of awe-inspiring wildlife.

Spend your time sinking into the sandy beaches, partaking in boat cruises, guided walks, or even galloping across the horizon via horseback. For water babies, why not delve into their scuba ventures for an aquatic thrill?

ISimangaliso also offers an excellent range of accommodation for those not quite ready to leave.

Tatham Art Gallery

Tatham isn’t just a lesser known gem, it’s a cultural one too. This gallery is one of South Africa’s finest and serves the Msunduzi region through Visual Arts.

The museum hosts a mixture of diverse artwork in different rooms. It’s perfect for art enthusiasts or those looking for a hit of art and culture.

Major exhibitions are held in the main exhibition room, where KZN artwork is frequently shown. Other rooms tend to showcase temporary artwork, ensuring a fresh experience upon every visit.

Tatham also has a shop offering an array of art and souvenirs for purchase.

Nelson Mandela Capture Site

If you’re planning on making a stop at Howick during your stay in KZN. We’d recommend a historical stop at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. This 3D-style sculpture was conjured up by Marco Cianfanelli, and consists of 50 steel poles that measure up to 10 metres high.

The site pays homage to Madiba’s 27 year incarceration.  The artwork seemingly conjures Nelson Mandela’s face from a distance, but when up close, appears to be no more than steel poles cleverly placed. This sculpture marks the exact location where Nelson Mandela was arrested 50 years ago. Explore the visitor's museum and shop for colourful handicrafts at the craft stalls.
