The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum is most known for its extensive collection of works and artefacts from Louis Comfort Tiffany, son of the famous jeweller and founder of boutique retailer Tiffany & Co. Becoming the company’s first design director, Tiffany made a name for himself as a glassmaker and designer of stained glass.
Louis Comfort Tiffany was well known for his beautiful stained glass and the museum houses fine examples of his work which included jewellery, leaded glass, lamps and many other beautiful items. Tiffany’s great interest was in glassmaking and he famously helped decorate parts of the White House in the 1880’s, adding stunning stained glass screens and other objects to the Executive Residence. He was the first to use Favrile glass, a coloured glass which he patented in 1894. He received great exposure during the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair Columbian Exhibition and critical acclaim for his works with Favrile during the 1900 Paris Exposition.
The museum houses many examples of this great artist’s works and these artefacts form the centrepiece of the museum. Additional exhibits include an extensive American pottery collection as well as paintings from many famous American and European artists.
