The Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza is a stunning art collection tracing the evolution of European art from the early 13th century right to the modern era. Examples from every important movement are found here – with pieces ranging from the subtle portraits of Van Dyck to the bold colours of Van Gogh, there will be something in the collection that captures the eye of everyone that enters the gallery.

The Thyssen-Bornemisza has over 1500 works exploring art from the 13th century right up to the late 20th century. From Baroque to Pop Art, Romanticism to German Impressionism, and Renaissance to Impression, every major movement has a place in this gallery creating a rounded permanent collection sure to entice anyone with an appreciation for the visual arts. The collection spans some 800 years of European art, selecting and promoting prominent artists and artworks. Pieces of note include those by Caravaggio, Renoir, Picasso, Van Dyck, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Monet and Carpaccio – the list of famous names is never ending in this extraordinary collection. Not surprisingly, it is consistently ranked as the best art gallery in Madrid.

The museum also hosts an education program, offering a range of lectures, courses, tours, concerts and much more. Information on upcoming events can be found by contacting the gallery. Temporary exhibitions change often, and tend to be a nice mix of internationally renowned artists, famous Spanish names and underground Madrid creators. During the summer these temporary exhibitions are often open until 11pm – what better way to spend a night in Madrid than viewing some fine art at the Thyssen before heading up to the rooftop restaurants for tapas and sangria?

The Thyssen-Bornemisza is located in downtown Madrid between Parque de Retiro and the Palacio Real. It’s a great region to spend a day exploring – a morning at the museum could be followed by an al fresco picnic in Parque de Retiro, before a leisurely afternoon walk across to the palace. Get to this part of town by taking Line 2 of the subway to Banco de España.
