Some of the U.S.A.’s most famous and popular beaches are located in and around Miami. The Atlantic Coast beckons with long, white sand beaches continuing as far as the eye can see. There are multitudes of vibrant beach areas to choose from, all with contrasting settings. Whether it’s a beach with an urban setting, one in a trendy resort area or in a quaint residential district, chances are there’s a great beach nearby where you can unwind and relax.
The main beach area is on the island of Miami Beach. Originally a long peninsula, it was made an island in the early 1920’s when the top end of the peninsula was opened in order to connect the Atlantic with Biscayne Bay. Here are just two of the most popular beaches on this beautiful island coastline.
South Beach
South Beach covers a long area on the southern end of Miami Beach. Famous for the many art deco buildings that line Ocean Drive, this beautiful stretch of coast line is filled with restaurants, cafés, colourful hotels and nonstop action. The wide beach is a favourite destination with both tourists and locals and there’s plenty of room for all to enjoy the sun, sand and surf. The southern end of the beach is the perfect place to watch the many cruise ships that come in and out of the busy Port of Miami. Life guards are located along the beach and there are ample restroom facilities.
Haulover Beach
Located on the far northern tip of the island, the 1.4 mile long Haulover Beach is another beautiful wide stretch of sand with waves that are perfect for swimming and surfing. An excellent bike path and walkway lines the beach and is the perfect place for some beachside exercise. One of the most popular areas of Haulover Beach is its 0.4 mile clothing optional area. This section is considered to be one of the finest clothing optional beaches in the world. As always, it’s important to remember that this is Florida’s only legally sanctioned clothing optional section of beach and nude swimming or sunbathing is only allowed within its legal boundaries.
Just across the street is the inviting Haulover Beach Park which lines Biscayne Bay. The park features restaurants, a golf course, tennis courts and places to rent kayaks.
