Anyone with an appreciation for history, in particular an appreciation for travel and transport will marvel at this comprehensive museum dedicated to the engineering marvels that were designed to keep us moving. Travel after all is the stuff that dreams are made of, and it inspired many a designer, engineer and builder to produce the next big thing in transportation.
With technological advancement came bigger, faster, more efficient methods of travel and the Riverside Museum highlights the history and progression of many of those methods which are so often taken for granted in today’s fast paced world. Organised into nine different theme areas, each one is designed with illuminating displays, exhibits and story-lines all designed to transport the visitor to a different time and place, creating a journey of exploration.
One interesting area is the museum’s recreated 1895 street which leads to an exhibit depicting various Glasgow shops through time, from an early 1900’s Edwardian photo studio to a 1960’s auto garage. With over 3,000 items on display, the museum houses everything from cars and motorbikes to streetcars, buses and even a tall ship – a clyde built ship berthed outside the museum at Pointhouse Quay.
Situated on the northbank of the River Clyde, the museum is a ten minute walk from Patrick Station and Kelvinhall Station. Signs are posted with directions to Riverside.
