Experience one of Japan’s oldest shrines at Osaka’s Sumiyoshi-taisha. This historic shrine from the third century is one of the few that are purely Japanese; built before architectural influences from the Asian mainland. Japanese features include straight ninety degree angled roof tops as opposed to sloped or drooping roofs. As one of Japan’s most valuable architectural sites and oldest shrines it is a must see when in Osaka.
The beautiful grounds include landscaped gardens and another famous Japanese feature – the arched bridge. The Taiko Bridge is a lovely bridge that spans a pond which is located just past the traditional stone gate. The shrine is dedicated to the Shinto gods that protect sailors and travellers by sea.
Sumiyoshi-taisha can be reached by the Nankai Main Line and is just a short walk from the Sumiyoshi Taisha Station. Only local train lines stop at this station and not the faster express trains. The Hankai Tramway also serves the shrine from Tennoji city’s Tennojiekimae Station. Disembark at Sumiyoshikoen Station which is just outside the park.
