The intricate and delicate looking structure that makes up this great art museum is a work of art in itself. Meant to resemble bamboo, intricate steel shapes resembling wings fan out as if ready to soar into the sky creating an urban landmark like no other. Opened in 1977, this is now one of Japan’s leading museums with a vast collection that reflects its relevance in the art world.
Today the museum’s collection contains over 6,000 works with over a third of these consisting of prints. When including graphic design and famous poster work by Yokoo along with watercolours and sketches, the museum’s collection could be said to be seventy percent of the paper medium. Additional works include paintings on canvass, many of which include the famous Japanese style painting of Nihonga along with sculptures, furniture, lighting fixtures and industrial design.
The intriguing floor space of this unique museum only enhances the collection and walking through the galleries is a mesmerising journey. The dramatic museum entrance is all glass and surrounded by bamboo inspired steel poles resembling wings. Another unique feature of this museum is that the gallery spaces are all underground. The large, open gallery spaces are warm and inviting and offer a contemporary space in which to view a great collection.
The museum is easily reached by both subway and bus service. The Watanabebashi Station is served by the Keihan Nakanoshima Line and is just a five minute walk away. When leaving the station, proceed to exit 2 and proceed southwest to the museum. Bus service is available from the JR Osaka Station to Taminobashi Station just a three or four minute walk to the museum. Bus service is provided by #53 and #75.
