One of the best places anywhere to see Australian reptile life, the Alice Springs Reptile Centre is an amazing sanctuary with over a hundred reptiles from fifty different species. From goannas, lizards and Thorny Devils to snakes of all kinds, the Reptile Centre offers a uniquely Australian experience.
With indoor exhibits and naturally landscaped outdoor exhibits, visitors are given the opportunity to get up close to the wild life. The staff conduct daily informative talks which may also include a feeding and even handling of the friendlier reptiles. One of the most fascinating exhibits is for ‘Terry’ the saltwater crocodile. This elaborate exhibit offers a revealing view of Terry from both above and below the water. A wonderfully inventive exhibit and gecko habitat introduces visitors to the Northern Territory and Top-end gecko species in the Gecko Cave.
From its humble beginnings in 2000, the Reptile Centre continues to expand and evolve. It has received many awards and in 2012 was awarded Advance Eco Tourism status. The centre has also become a ‘snake call-out’ centre and is on stand-by in the event a snake or reptile requires removal from a home or business. The Reptile Centre is trained in the capture and handling of venomous snakes which are then taken back to the centre, tagged and released back into the wild away from residential areas.
The Alice Springs Reptile Centre is located in Alice Springs just off the Stuart Highway.
