Geologist Henry Evans discovered the admired red cliffs were actually massive bauxite deposits in 1955. Mining in the area began soon after and the current town was built largely by Comalco in the 1960s. It's illegal to carry alcohol in much of the 'top end' so just check with the relevant authorities before travelling.
Weipa is on the western side of Cape York Peninsula, Queensland. Flights to Weipa usually link through Cairns.
