Most visitors to Wales make the country’s cosmopolitan capital Cardiff their first port of call. A largely modern city which nevertheless boasts plenty of historic sites, Cardiff is home to an eye-catching castle, the National Museum Cardiff and the eternally popular Millennium Stadium.
The coastal city of Swansea is another of Wales’ most visited towns, with this picturesque seaside town routinely voted one of the nation’s friendliest. It’s also one of its most scenic, and the Gower Peninsula on which it stands was the first designated “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” in the United Kingdom.
Outside the bustling major cities, Wales offers plenty more things to see and do. The hauntingly desolate mountains of Snowdonia highlight the country’s rugged natural beauty, while culturally-inclined Aberystwyth and the maritime county of Pembrokeshire also attract their fair share of visitors, in what is one of Britain’s most diverse and visually dramatic destinations.
