Walking the frenzied streets of modern Tokyo, it's hard to imagine that the city started life as a quaint fishing village called Edo. The city first attracted significant attention during the seventeenth century when Tokugawa Ieyasu as Shogun, made the city his base; spurring Edo on to become one of the largest cities in the world by 1721 with a population of over one million people. It was Emperor Meiji who changed the name to Tokyo in 1868. Today the city is a financial hub and one of the great cities of contemporary society.
