Beef is big business here but the local attractions are varied. There's a core of attractive historic architecture and you'll find a zoo, art gallery, botanical gardens and the Dreamtime Cultural Centre all worth a trip. Mount Archer National Park affords excellent views across the city from its 600 metre summit.
The Capricorn Caves are a 20-minute drive north and make sure to book flights to Rockhampton early if you'll be in town during The Village Festival or September's annual Big River Jazz festival. You can pack quite lightly – Rockhampton enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine per year.
