The Southern Cassowary, Native to New Guinea
It is here at the Port Moresby Nature Park that you can enjoy a taste of Papua New Guinea's lush flora and fauna without having to venture too far from the city. Within the gardens are a wide range of native animals including tree kangaroos, wallabies, crocodiles, snakes, bird of paradise, parrots as well as three species of Cassowaries, making it the only place in the world where you can view all three. Set your own pace along the boardwalk and discover the magnificent natural beauty of Port Moresby.
If you prefer sand and sea then the popular swimming spot of Idler's Beach is sure to do the trick. The peaceful stretch of beach is the perfect place for a dip. As a conservative society, locals tend to swim wearing shorts and shirts so leave the revealing swim suits at home.
Traditional Papuan Dancers
On dry land, the best place to mix with the locals is at one of the city's markets such as the Ela Beach Craft Market which takes place on the last Saturday of every month. Within the markets you'll find an array of exotic items including colourful clothing, necklaces made from wild boars' tusks and bags made from possum-wool.
