Pakistan formally became an independent country with the partition of India in 1947. Badshahi Mosque
Unless crossing overland into Pakistan, the capital Islamabad, is generally the first port of call for curious travellers. This is largely an administrative city, however visitors should check out the Lok Virsa Museum, the National Art Gallery and take a stroll around the Fatima Jinnah Park. For views across the city, head up to Daman-e-Koh, where the hiking trails are scenic, the restaurants serve delicious meals and the terrain is enticing.

After exploring the sites in the capital, consider heading to Karachi, Pakistan's former capital. The beautiful city boasts one of the must-see attractions of the country. The Quaid-e-Azam's Mazar is the mausoleum of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. The structure, completed by 1970, is made of white marble and incorporates traditional Moorish architecture. To relax, enjoy wandering along the waterfront or chill on the nearby beaches including Tushan Beach and French Beach.
