Nearby Mount Whaleback's underground riches were discovered in the late 1950s and the Newman township was built by the Mount Newman Mining Company during the following decade. Tours operate at the massive, open pit mine and will give you some perspective on the 7-kilometre long train that hauled ore on the Newman–Port Headland line in 2001.
If you take a flight to Newman in summer, be prepared for the heat – its daily temperatures are more like Baghdad than Broome. But you'll always find respite in the beautiful gorges and waterholes of the closest national park, Karijini, a 2-hour drive from Newman on sealed highway.
