Captain Cook first sighted the islands now known as New Caledonia in 1774, however it took just under another century before European powers colonised the region. The French established a penal colony in 1854 and over the coming decades sent around 22,000 convicts to the island. Today, New Caledonia remains a dependent territory of France and therefore offers a fascinating blend of traditional island culture and European influence.
New Caledonia consists of 36 islands. The largest island is Grande Terre boasting the capital, Noumea. South of Noumea, Baie des Citrons and the Anse Vata are great beaches. Riviere Bleue, northeast of Noumea is a national park that offers satisfying hiking opportunities. Grande Terre boasts the world's largest coral lagoon that makes a great starting point for snorkelers. Îlot Canard is another good snorkelling option.
For the ultimate in relaxation, consider chartering a yacht and sitting back and enjoying the beautiful islands of New Caledonia such as the Loyalty Islands, including Lifou, Fayaoue and Tadine located to the east of Grande Terre. Also consider exploring the Belep archipelago or the Isle of Pines. You can explore all the islands in the archipelago with our cheap flights to New Caledonia.
