Captain Cook first sighted the islands now known as New Caledonia in 1774, however it took just under another century before European powers colonised the region. The French established a penal colony in 1854 and over the coming decades sent around 22,000 convicts to the island. Today, New Caledonia remains a dependent territory of France and therefore offers a fascinating blend of traditional island culture and European influence.
