Today the 53 kilometre-square island is home to around 650 people but the population has been in the thousands in the past, specifically when used as a military base during World War Two. Stories of the men and women who served here form a major part of one of the island tours.
Otherwise, after a flight to Horn Island you can just enjoy a slice of very quiet life where the rhythms are marked by the tides and the sun. Remember, the dry season is May–November.
