This central Queensland port city has the world's fourth-largest coal exporting terminal – and most of its industries are mining related – but there's history, shopping and art here too. There are scenic walks, drives and gardens as well. If you do want to get up close to heavy industry though, free tours are available.
You'll probably know Gladstone as the launch point for the southern Great Barrier Reef, where you can enjoy superb snorkelling and diving at a handful of nearby islands, including Heron and Lady Musgrave.
