With more than 100 freshwater lakes, rainforest, eucalypt forest, mangroves and coastal heath across most of its 122 kilometre length, fringed by unspoilt beach, it's an outdoor lover's mecca. Camping is popular and the 90 kilometre-long Fraser Island Great Walk is a beautiful trek.
You can have an amazing four-wheel drive adventure here on dunes higher than 200 metres or throw in a line to catch golden trevally, surf bream, whiting, flathead and jewfish. Most visitors arrive by barge or passenger ferry but you can get a charter flight to Fraser Island from the nearest airport at Hervey Bay.
