The picturesque River Liffey separates Dublin into a north and south divide. On the southern side consider exploring the country's most famous University, Trinity College, which contains the historic Book of Kells, Dublin Castle and St Patrick's Cathedral. St Stephen's Green and Merrion Square Park are Dublin's most famous designed garden squares and provide a wonderful oasis to rest. Also allow time to admire the collection in the National Gallery of Ireland, appreciate the architecture of the Shelbourne Hotel and shop in the Powerscourt Centre.
On the north side, the Spire on O'Connell Street has become an icon of the city since its construction in 2003. Opposite the spire is the General Post Office, which featured heavily in early twentieth century Irish history. It's also worth checking out Customs House and wandering through the recently renovated Docklands area. Consider attending a performance at either the Abbey or Gate Theatre – both have international reputations for staging thought-provoking productions.
For beer fans, the Guinness Storehouse offers tours through the facility. Other sites of note scattered throughout the city include the fascinating Kilmainham Gaol, the Chester Beatty Library and Christ Church Cathedral, the oldest building in the city. To the west is the largest enclosed park in Europe – Phoenix Park, which contains expansive grass lands, as well as the residence of the Irish President and Dublin Zoo.
