6 Car Rental Tips for a Smooth Journey

Hiring a rental car is a great way to get around on holiday. It gives you the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever you want. But renting a car can be a bit stressful – especially for first timers. We’ve put together a few handy tips to save money on your trip and make your car rental experience a breeze.

1. Choose the right car

Take some time to think about the type of car you really need. While you definitely want the most value for money, you also want to make sure your car has all the right features for a comfortable journey. If you’re travelling with kids or lots of gear, consider renting something on the larger side like an SUV. If you’re doing a long-haul trip, check the fuel economy to avoid gas guzzlers. Some countries (especially in Europe) have very narrow city streets that can be stressful to navigate in a bigger car. Do some research into your destination to get a feel for what the driving experience will be like before booking your car.

2. Fill up the tank

Your rental car probably came with a full tank of petrol. Make sure you fill it up again before dropping your car back at the rental company. It might be more convenient to just let them do it for you, but you’ll get charged quite a lot extra. Save some cash and swing by a petrol station instead.

3. Go with one driver

Some car rental companies charge extra for each person who’ll be behind the wheel. If you’re not going to be driving very long distances that require you to share the driving, simply stick to one driver instead.

4. Make it a round trip

Try to collect and drop off your car at the same location if your route allows. It may even be worth tweaking your trip a bit, as it will save you quite a bit of cash in the long run.

5. Inspect everything

Most rental cars already have a few dings and scratches from previous drivers. It’s really important to note any damage before you drive off so you don’t get the blame! Inspect the car with one of the dealer’s representatives, and take photos of every detail – inside and out. Windshield cracks, hub cap scratches, upholstery tears and everything else should all be noted.

6. Don’t be late!

Rental car companies are pretty strict when it comes to returning your car on time. At most you’ll get about 30 minute’s grace period before you get charged for another full day. So plan your route way in advance and leave extra time for traffic jams to avoid late fees.
