Surfing along Australia’s Great Ocean Road

5 March 2015

The Great Ocean Road is as appealing as it sounds for a surf trip when visiting Australia. Only one-and-a-half hour’s drive from Melbourne, it is host to some of the finest surf breaks Australia has to offer, such as the world-famous Bells Beach and Winkipop, as well as some equally good, lesser known surf breaks.

The Great Ocean Road represents the coastal region of south-west Victoria in Australia. It is a 273km-stretch of road along the south-east coast, one of Australia's most scenic drives.

It is also home to the worlds longest-running surf contest, the Rip Curl Pro, which takes place at Bells Beach every Easter. The hub of the surf scene here is around the town of Torquay, where you can pick up some great bargains from the surf outlets that stock all the famous brands such as Rip Curl, Billabong and Quicksilver.

A perfect spot for a surf

There are plenty of surf schools along the coast that are able to assist you with lessons. Surfboards are also available to rent if you are not travelling with your own. Be sure to rent or pack in a wetsuit for the cooler waters along this coastline. Booties and a hoodie are recommended for the winter months (June through to September), when both the outside air temperature and water temperature can drop below 15C. Sunscreen and bug spray are also essential items to pack in for any Australian holiday.
